San Giovanni a Mazzocca, Fortore rural region, South Italy
'XVI century Monastery of San Giovanni a Mazzocca. This church is situated at the top of a hill close to the lake of San Giovanni, one of the windiest and highest places of the whole area'
Liminaria looks at creating a narrative that will give a new perspective to cultural, social, natural, architectural and landscape elements of the land, by having local communities teaming up with artists, curators, researchers, writers, and specialists of new technology.
Our contribution to Reveil will be focused on the soundscape of a strong representative place in the imaginary of Fortore rural community, the XVI century Monastery of San Giovanni a Mazzocca. This church is situated at the top of a hill close to the lake of San Giovanni, one of the windiest and highest places of the whole area.
It is connected with St. John the Eremite of Tufara, who gave the go-ahead to the construction of the monastery in "Gualdo Mazzocca" at Foiano in the territory of Benevento, which became a center of human and Christian learning. From this abbey came forth the principles of monasticism in aid of outcasts and of the oppressed of feudal society, offering not only contemplation and prayer, but works and concrete support.
Later the church was destroyed and rebuilt, finally becoming a symbolic place for the whole community of the Fortore region.
We will record and stream the sound of dawn from San Giovanni a Mazzocca as a way to narrate a place that is a geographical centre in a marginalized area, aiming at raising some questions related with tracking borders, stories and times of a complex rural landscape where different elements converge in time and space.
So our soundcamp is conceived to be a laboratory to question the role of sound as narrative and a critical device for unveiling (and “Re-veiling”) untold stories in remote areas such as Fortore.
